Born into a Volleyball Family, Joe is the 8th of 9 Volleyball Players. With siblings who played first on the beach, then club, high school, and collegiately, it was fait accompli that Joe would continue in the family tradition. Growing up in the sand and watching his brothers and sisters play, Joe picked up the game quickly.

With limited playing success, Joe took the skills he observed and became an organizer, administrator, and coach. One of the first individuals to run amateur short-court tournaments when the beach rules changed, Joe was picked up by the EVP tour, then the AVP tour where he eventually became the director of the AVPNext program. While Director of AVPNext, Joe expanded the program and brought a new professionalism to development. Through Joe, the AVP added Clinics, Camps, and on-site developmental tournaments which eventually gave rise to the collegiate beach volleyball tournaments which, in turn helped foster the inclusion of beach volleyball as an NCAA sport. Through Joe, the sport also enjoyed a new national ranking system and AVPNext website which brought together players and events from across the United States.

With the demise of the AVP in 2010, Joe has returned to coaching. Joe is still a certified beach referee, and holds USAV beach and indoor certification as a coach. "High School indoor volleyball is the best place to be!" says Joe, who believes that development of the sport resides in the hands of the many coaches across the country. He also continues his tradition of beach volleyball development by organizing outdoor volleyball events in the Columbia Empire Region of USAVolleyball.
