Began playing beach volleyball in 1993 while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico. He became intrigued and wanted to excel at the sport, so he watched the AVP players on TV and began reading volleyball books by Karch Kiraly, Jeff Lucas and William Neville. Played indoor for the University of Tennessee Men's Volleyball Club from 1995-97, which had top three placings in 10 tournaments. He also assisted the Lady Vols varsity volleyball program. Graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Science.
Worked for a non-profit agency that provides support for adults with disabilities in Knoxville, Tenn. Also helped establish the University of Tenessee Women's Volleyball Club in 1998, and coached them from 1998-2000 and 2002-2004. Provided private coaching and training, coaching Junior Olympic and high school volleyball teams and team camps from 2001-2005. Also became involved with the Special Olympics.
His brother, Nathan, also plays. The two "Harvey Boys" played tournaments in the South and began playing on the AVP after Nathan moved to California in 2001.
